You should check out the book victory over the darkness by neil anderson. He's a counselor and he's dealt with people with mental illnesses that were spiritual.... although he believes that some can be problems with brain chemistry. I believe it takes discernment to know the different. Lord knows all, never hurts to consult Him.
I personally know that if i person is harboring demons they will mess with their mind. If a person is believing a lie about their existence contrary to what God speaks in his word, then you better believe there will be demons supporting it. Thats my two sense.

i do not think that it has anything to do with spirits, but a chemical imbalance. i have seen hundreds of people afflicted with this illness, such as schizophrenia, and usually the people affected respond well to medications, and the voices, and halucinations dissappear. i do not think a spirit can respond to medication. there are xrays of peoples brains, with mental illness, that show a abnormal brain activity, and that a some mental illness, such as schizophrenia are genetic. i know of whole families that are afflicted with this illness. i know of schizophrenic families were some of the the parents families had schizophrenia and some of their offspring were also schizophrenic. i have known cased of a person afflicted with mental illness, and some pastors or religious people will pray over people to cast out the spirits, but have never been sucessfull. hope this helps

My preacher believes in spirits and my doctor believes in a chemical imbalance. I have schizophrenia. According to my preacher, this is the result of sin in the world, so I prayed and prayed and still had symptoms. My doctor put me on Zoloft, Abilify and Wellbutrin, and I no longer have any symptoms of schizophrenia. I realize there's no cure, but I tend to believe in the chemical imbalance in the brain.

Personally, I don't think there's really any difference between the two ideas. It's just two different ways to explain the same thing. A neurotransmitter might be a "spirit" depending on how you look at it.
People who would use the "spirit" idea are probably not aware of the existance of things like neurotransmitters. People who subscribe to the scientific theory probably wouldn't accept the idea of things like spirits; at least not literally.
