it will take longer to reach the desired effects. anti depressants/anxiety medications (excluding short term relief meds such as xanax) can take up to 3-4 weeks to get the full effect, and thats if you take it every day. if youre not taking your prozac every day because of a bad side effect or youre starting to feel worse, then thats a whole different story, tell your doctor right away.

Prozac can be used for a multitude of mental disorders, but I guess it's most famous for treating depression. If you don't take it every day, the medicine can't work. Your body needs to be at what's called a "therapeutic dose", where the body has enough of medication at a STEADY level to be effective. If you don't take it every day, you should be having mood swings or just feeling plain old depressed each day.
If you don't like it, ask to be switched to something else...Prozac has some not so nice side effects (one biggy being loss of sexual appetite). Also, if you just don't like the idea of being on a med, try exercise and counseling. Both have lots of studies behind them that support improvement in depression, while other studies show that they are just as effective as an antidepressant.
Whatever you do, if you feel suicidal, call 911 immediately.

Prozac is as equally as effective as other anti-depressants although it may have it's pros and cons in terms of its side effect profile and duration of effect. Prozac (fluoxetine) stays in the body relatively longer than other antidepressants hence your withdrawal symptoms will not appear as adruptly as taking other antidepressants but its still important to take it everyday to get the maximum benefit.
The first few weeks of taking this you will experience more side effects (i.e. headaches, dry mouth, drowsiness, irritability etc) but these side effects will subside after 2-3 weeks. Your mood will often starts to pick up in between 4-6 weeks so it's important to perservere.

If you've been prescribed that amount and you get a good response, i.e., it helps you with few side effects, then take it as prescribed. If it makes you feel bad, talk to your doc about chaning the med or dose, but don't be wishy washy about taking them. You can end up being so casual about it that you forget how much you took and when, and that would defeat the entire purpose of taking them. If you feel fine on that dose, but eventually feel it doesn't suit you, tell your doc. Being so casual about it could be a form of rebellion, sort of like saying, "I'm going to decide when and how much I take, nobody else." But the only person you will hurt is yourself.

Yes, you can stop getting the effects that are the reason you started taking it in the first place.
You can also start getting with-drawls from not taking it. Symptoms can but don't always include:
*Dizziness
*Nausea
*Headaches
*Tiredness
Trust me, if your on them you should take them as prescribed unless you first talk with your doctor who can help you ween yourself off of them by slowly lowering your dosage.

If you don't take medicine as prescribed, you will not get the desired effect. You need to either start taking it everyday, or speak with your doctor about it and figure out another solution.
