Beware of Coat of Arms Peddlers. There are companies in the U.S. that will sell you one based solely on your surname since the United States does not have any laws re heraldry. Not everyone with the same surname come from the same root. These companies are all over the internet. They are not illegal but not honest. Yes, Granny is right; you need to trace your family. Surnames do not always indicate much. Start with your parents and work backwards. Get as much information from your family as possible, particularly senior members.

1070 CE: William the Conquerer invites a colony of Jews from Rouen to enter Norman England primarily because the Church forbids Christians from lending money during the Middle Ages. The Jews, by way of contrast, are forbidden from owning land or engaging in a trade, except for medicine (and money lending, of course).

1290: Edward I expels the Jews from England.

1656: Oliver Cromwell invites a small colony of Sephardic Jews to re-enter England.

1837 & 1841: Queen Victoria knights a Jew, and a Jew receives an honorary title.

1855: Sir David Soloman becomes the Mayor of London.

1858: Jews are now allowed to sit in Parliament; Lionel de Rothschild takes his place in the House of Commons.

1874: Benjamin Disrael, a Christian convert of Jewish parentage, becomes the British Prime Minister.

1880 to 1912: 250,000 Russian Jews settle in urban areas.

Late 1930s: 40,000 Jews escape from Nazi Germany and Austria; 50,000 Jews from Italy, Poland, and Eastern Europe also escape to England.

Today: Curently 300,000 Jews live in metropolitan London, primarily in the Golders Green section of the city. Other large Jewish communities are found in Manchester and Safford. Jews have easily been assimilated into every aspect of British society. A list of Jewish entertainers and writers easily confirms that they enjoy a dual identity.

Jewish-English actors and personalities: Joan Collins, Leslie Howard, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Stephen Frye, Jerry Springer, Hermione Gingolde, Peter Sellers, Marty Feldman, Sharon Osbourne

Jewish-English authors: Harld Pinter, Leonard Woolf, Siegfried Sassoon

By the way, Friedman is a German-Jewish name taken from Yiddish, meaning "peace".
