Nope, I don't think it's possible to learn a martial art in just 2 months... unless you count boxing. That has the fastest learning curve, so far as I know. But it's not really considered a martial art.

I consider Tae Kwon Do to be a good beginner art. Of course, Karate would work as well. Those two are very popular martial arts, so you could continue your training at another school after you return from summer vacation.

But you should look around at other styles and determine which ones you are interested in. Yes, I know this involves a bit of research, and research is scary, but it will help ensure that you get something out of martial arts.

*edit* and no, you won't learn TKD or karate in just 1-2 months.

Schools and instructors like this have fallen by the way side for the most part. You can find them occasionally but not in a shopping center where the rent is $3-$5 K per month or more and the students all are wearing gis that look more like NBA warm-up suits. Search around and check some of the municipal and parks and rec programs. Some old instructors have moved to that area where they have no rent, utilities, or other overhead and can focus on teaching instead of the bottom line. Such an instructor like what you are talking about would love to have a dedicated, mature student like yourself in the program to pass things onto and occasionally help with the younger students and program. I myself keep my school in a very low rent, meager building so that the costs are low and I can pay them out of my pocket if needed. Some people have cars, others have boats or motorcycles, I have my own martial arts school and it allows me to be selective about things and not try to turn out fighters and black-belts using the cookie cutter approach and producing mass numbers of weak students. One of the other things I have noticed over the past few years is that the younger generations, especially children don't want to seriously take martial arts but rather play at taking martial arts. Some of the teens that have posted in here have even admited that they take MMA because it is popular and not because they want to. I don't have time for students like that and I send them down the road while an individual like yourself is always welcome and a breath of fresh air.

Everyone else is right, you cannot learn a martial art in 1 month. But what you can do is attend seminars on various fighting styles. You will need to do some homework to see what is available during the period you are there.
This will be especially useful if you have some prior training before you arrive. I became Army Unarmed Combat qualified in four weeks (live-in full time training) so it is possible if you pick the right course - but don't think you'll be black belt standard.

You might want to take one of those 4 to 8 week self defense courses. It's impossible to learn a martial art in a couple of months.

martial arts is not something you learn over night or in a month or 2, you go all the way up to a tenth don that is a grand master. their are a lot of good styles of martial arts
like hopkido and aikido that's like Steven Seagal stuff.

no school is in existence that will teach the whole thing in a month. A good martial art will have large loads of material that needs to be learned.

A good martail artist could spend their entire life devoted to the craft and still not learn it all.

I wouldn't suggest Tae Kwon Do if you want to learn it in a month. I don't think you can learn any martial art in one month. If you want to take longer, I would take TKD. It is a very good martial art, very round.
