No special equipment necessary. I like to use a heavy action rod with a 40lb. test line on a baitcasting reel. I also us short pieces of 2" PVC (20" to 30" in length) pipe driven into the sand as rod holders. Live bait such as cocahoe minnows, crabs or shrimp as well as cut bait , dead shrimp or dead crabs all work well. Fish on the bottom with dead bait and under a cork or on the bottom with live bait. A good pair of fishing gloves also come in handy, saltwater fish can be rough on the hands.

Depends what you're fishing for and whether you're using bait or a lure. You might use a light rig (6 or 8 pound test) for small perch and the like, and there are people who use heavy tackle (50 pound test plus) for sharks and rays.

Generally, you need a rod and reel capable of casting out to where the fish are. A long rod is very useful for this. If you're bait fishing, you need a rod holder (generally called a sand spike -- generally metal, about 3 feet long, with a pointed end you stick into the sand and a rod holder on the other end) to hold the rod high while you wait for a bite. This keeps the rod tip high so the line is above the breakers, so the bait won't get dragged around and you can see a bite.

Other than that, the equipment is basically the same as you'd use for fishing from a pier or a boat.

A 10' fishing pole, a reel that is capable of holding about 200 yards of 20-pound test line, pyramid sinkers, 4 to 5 ounces, sometimes more depending on the surf, a two-foot sand spike, a portable chair, and patience.
