I am looking to pursue becoming a Food Service Specialist for the US Coast Guard. After boot camp, do I go straight to living on base? If so, can my wife come live with me while I train in the specific area I am looking at (food service)? Or is it like boot camp where I have to be there by myself? If it is the latter, when can we get our own place on base so I can have her come live with me?

probably will depend on the base itself and what the housing situation is like.

First off, right after Boot, you will go to school.. and that will be Unacompanied. you will have to live in the barracks and will not be allowed to bring your family along. Now, there isn;tanything reventing your wife from moving there anyway, but understand: you won't be able to live with her,and it will ALL be out of pocket.

Once you get orders to a permanent duty station you willbe able to bring your family along. whether or not you will get base hosuing, again depends onnt he availibitlity of housing in your paygrade and Bedroom entitlement. if there is no housing available, you would get BAH, which is based on yoru paygrade and will help defray the costs of renting on the economy.

I'm not sure how that exact situation will work but my sister's husband is in the coast guard and she's moving with him to his next station. Also I'm in the Navy and I was told that as long as my school was longer than a certain time frame my husband could move with me. You'll have to talk to your recruiter or superior for that particular base's rules on couples without children. After boot camp you are supposed to go straight to your first command so you should get an application soon and fill it out because there's usually a wait.

When you finish basic and ait you can live together but not until then. You should be earning your pay and you should be getting bha. I would seriously speak with your recruiter asap about this or I would talk with family members and see what can be done. You should get paid within your first month. There is also something called an Army Relief loan, however it usually is not a lot of money. Once again, call your recruiter now as they can answer this honestly. Are you going active duty or reserve? EDIT: In response to your added details, I say this - get off of the computer and call your recruiter asap. You need to get a plan together now and he can probably tell you what you need to do. Good luck.

You wife can only accompany you to school if your school is over 6 months long, very few schools are. But she will definitely be able to live with you on base at your duty station if housing is available. not all Coast Guard bases have on base housing. When you receive your orders (you'll be in school) send them to her. She can take a copy of your orders to the nearest Coast Guard base and have you put on the housing list for your duty station. this should help you get into housing faster. If there is no base housing available, they will help get you an apartment or house. The military works with alot of local apartments around the bases and most apartments wave the deposits for the military. Also, if you are moving your belongings, make sure she goes to the transportation office and sets up for the movers to come. they usually need about 2-3 months notice to come out and pack your things.
You will be allowed leave between your school and reporting to your duty station. This will give you time to get ready to move.
Also, just for extra info......You will receive DLA (dislocation allowance) when you leave for your first duty station. This extra money (usually around $1000 or so) wll help pay for any expenses you may incur. Have your wife check into staying at TLQ when you first get to base. you can book reservations for up to 30 days while you look for housing. It cost roughly $25-30 a day. it is alot cheaper than renting a hotel room! Make sure you stay in close contact with your sponsor. you sponsor will help make the transition to your duty station as smooth as possible.

Good Luck! Coasties RULE!

After boot camp you'll be going to the Food Service Specialist school. She cannot go there with you.

After school you will be assigned to a permanent duty station. You'll be able to live together at this time. Of course, you'll most likely be on a ship and spending a lot of time at sea.

If there is space available on base you will live on base, if not you can live off base.

You'll get your assignment, and it should have 'accompanied' with it. If it doesn't---get it ammended to accompanied. That way the wife will be able to move with you--and the USCG will pay for her and your HHG's to be moved wherever you go.

The boot camp is only for mistresses, not wives.
