Apples & Oranges I am going to say Sheltie because that's what I have and not only are they loyal they are very obedient and very easy to train. Beagles are great dogs but very hard headed. Good luck with whomever you pick;^)

Years ago I had a Sheltie. She was a great dog except for one thing. She was an escape artist. No matter what I did she would find a way out of the yard. I don't know how many times I had to go the the shelter and bail her out.
I now have three dogs, one being a mutant Beagle, pure bred but about twice as a Beagle should be. He is not fat but weighs in at 40 lbs. With the long ears and big brown eyes I call Him "Sad Sack". Oh, his name is Snoopy. Maybe he is not normal but he is the last one of the dogs to try and bark at any noise. The Rat Terrier and the Pit Bull will bark at anything they hear. Snoopy will just stay on the bed or where he is, unless he thinks it is something to worry about. Then he will try to bark but it usually end up as a howl.
He is the most mellow dog I have ever had.

I have a Beagle and I love her. However, the kind of dog you get depends on your lifestyle. Shelties are herders, Beagles are hunters. Because of that, they have very different personalities. Beagles are more stubborn and a little harder to train. Still, my dog takes commands in English, Spanish, and with hand signals. She is very smart. Shelties are smart, are easier to housebreak than Beagles, but they bark a lot. Both are good with children. Both need a lot of exercise. Beagles have shorter hair, yet both shed. Personally, I love my Beagle. But, my aunt had a Sheltie for almost 13 years and he was a very smart and loyal pet. You will be happy with either one.

Well Shelties are very cute and look like mini collies, but I would never own one just b/c they have so much hair plus they are really smart so if they do not have a job they will bark all the time which is annoying.

I am not a huge fan of beagles but I would rather have one of them b/c they have short hair plus they are smaller

I like both. Both are hyper.

I have a Sheltie Basset mix and he is awesome!! Well behaved and easily trained.

You'll have more howling with the beagle, and more shedding with the sheltie.

Beagle seems country and sheltie seems like a city dog. : )

I have 2 Sheltie and love then .but mine are very small (under 20 lbs) You have to be care full about the adult size Shaltie may become a bit larger then beagle.
Both breeds love to be out doors and and love to run and play ,both are very loving .
So I guess that if you keep your eye open for either breed when the right dog for you comes your way you will know what breed is for you

sheltie hands down, all the beagles that i have come across, are nutty, and they cry very loud and often..
the shelties that also come in are very laid back and are just some of the best dogs that come in.

Beagles being the barkers they are, I would be forced to say Sheltie.
