Hello. A year ago I started having these horrible symptoms: extremely depressed, thoughts of harming myself and others, feeling of getting crazy, etc. I seeked professional help...the doctor diagnose was that I had Depression. He prescribed Cymbalta and Zyprexa, the symptoms went away. My question is....Why did the doctor say that I had Depression and he prescribed Zyprexa (antipsychotic drug) usually used for hallucinations? Did I have something else? Maybe the doctor did not tell me the whole diagnose for me not to get worried or scared?. How will Zyprexa withdrawal be? I am going to get these horrible thoughts again when I stop Zyprexa. Please help

I have depression and i'm under 18 and i was prescribed a drug approved only for people with epilepsy or bipolar disorder age 18 and older, and it's working great for me. Sometimes these drugs work for similar neurological diseases even though they're not approved for it. Also, I'm fairly sure it's against the law for a doctor to lie to you about your diagnosis. Why are you going off Zyprexa? You said it was working for you. Don't stop taking the drug or change the dose unless told to by your doctor. Yes, your bad thoughts will come back if you go off the drug. What the drug does is correct the imbalance of chemicals in your brain that are causing your bad thoughts. If you stop taking the drug immediately, the imbalance will return. If you do need to stop taking it, your doctor will tell you what to do. Good luck.

If the medication is working, Why are you going off of it? A lot of times--people think they are all better b/c they feel so much better on the medication, and then they go off--and are back feeling terrible.

I have been on and off of Paxil for 10 yrs--about a year ago, my dad passed away..and I started having major anxiety, and when I took Paxil--it made it WORSE, I would get manic. Anyhow, they told me I was ssri sensitive, and tried me on a litany of other "mood-stablizing" drugs--and one was an anti-psychotic.. (these drugs had HORRIBLE side effects--so I stopped taking them)..anyhow, I want to make two points.. Medicines are used for various reasons. A lot of anti-psychotics are used for people with depression--as well as, anti-seizure meds. So, he probably just had a lot of positive results w/other patients and decided that would be a good one for you to try first.

If you do decide to go off of it, don't do it all at once. Ween yourself off of it, maybe split your pills. Then after a few weeks, take only half a pill every other night. That is where people get into trouble, they send their brain chemistry in a tail spin when they just go cold turkey.

Good luck! If I found a drug that worked for me, I would DEFINITELY still be using it, and I miss the way I used to feel when Paxil worked properly on me.
