I need a quick answer!!! When you're talking about one student, do you say:
The freshmen student.
OR
The freshman student.

I need to know. I'm sending an email to my new college that I'm going to this fall and I'm trying to ask the art teacher a question about the classes but I'm stuck on the whole freshman or freshmen thing. I don't want to sound stupid to them by getting the word wrong.

Don't worry, this isn't a type of question that's helping me cheat. I'm just asking them a question and I need to send the email off now. Unfortunately, I can't go to my high school and ask my english teacher until Monday so I'm asking you all to help me. :)

I loved my Freshman year when I was in high school, new friends, fun life, minimal homework, the only thing that sucked was I got rejected by my high school crush isn't it ironic that he's now my fiance'? The rumors about getting thrown in the trashcan and getting beat up are false I was in high school for 4 years and nothing happened to me.

The freshman.
You don't have to say the freshman student.
You just say the freshman.
(The Freshmen would be plural. "There are a lot of lot of freshmen in my English class")
