Hey guys, I've recently purchased a set of headphones for about $100 at Radio Shack(Ultimate Ears FI 3). I am somewhat dissapointed, however, with the sound. I'm using it on my Creative Zen Vision: M. What I'm wondering is if I buy an amplifier for it, will it make the sound any better? I've also noticed the set has a weak bass response--will an amplifier fix this? If not, I may just take them back and get me a set of Bose Triport headphones. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An amplifier can't improve the quality of the audio. What it gets is what it will amplify. The only thing an amp may do is introduce more noise into the audio. An audio equalizer could help by allowing you to contour the audio, boosting the bass, etc. But this is masking the problem, not fixing it. If you want better audio you need to see why the audio is not up to what you want in the first place. It could be the headphones or it could be your existng amp.

Hi,Austen .How much are you prepared to spend on a better set of headphones ? The best headphones available are the Electrostatics which give you an enormous soundstage with full frequency range at high volumes with no distortion. They come with their own dedicated Amplifier to plug into your receiver. If you are having problems with the sound of your existing ones then they may not be good enough in the bass area .

I found a set of headphones that are recommended for your type of player. They are Sennheiser model PXC250.for $104.00 retail. Have a look at the link and see what you think.(Sennheiser are a very respectful brand of headphones)

If the equipment you have is loud enough (without clipping or distortion), a headphone amp won't do anything for you. How could it help the sound, other than color the frequency response? Maybe if it had a bass boost switch, thats all. More headroom (i.e. more power) means nothing if you are not clipping now.

I do not know muh about radio shack stuff - but it is not known for audiophile quality. Look into Sure, Seinheiser, Bose and other reputable headphones.
Headphone amp will improve the sound of your headphones if:
1. You have quality headphones
2. You get a quality amp.

One free CREEK Audio is under $200 and is pretty good. http://www.hcmaudio.com/comp.asp?compID=129
But there are others too...
