Buy a cheap compass at Wal-Mart, it will tell you rain or shine.

The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. So does the moon.

If it is morning, and you are driving into the sun then South is on your right, West is behind you, and North is on your left.

East West North South Directions

The sun always rises in the East and sets in the West. But that only helps in mornings and evenings when the sun is out.

I live in Chicago and I know that Lake Michigan is always to the east. So if I'm driving and can see the John Hancock bldg. or the Sears Tower, I have an idea what direction I'm driving.

The streets in Chicago also are clearly marked and increase or by 100 for every block you travel away from State St. (north and south) and Madison Ave.(east and west).

Do you have any landmark bldgs. in your city that can help you determine the direction you are going?

I once was driving in a suburb of Indianapolis and lost my sense of direction and had to call a friend to help me figure out which way to go. This is a good question.

Because you said specifically while driving and unless you purchase a compass some of the rest of these answers are a bit complex.
I am assuming you are driving in the contiguous 48 states here in the US.
Interstate highways that end in even numbers run east to west
Example I-10
and odd interstate highway numbers run north to south.
Example I-37
Also remember that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
If you can remember these you will always know which way you are headed while driving.

Easy watch the path of the sun.
Rise from the east and set in the west.

Sometimes you can tell east from west by the numbering system used in your area. Like where I live, odd numbers on on the west side of the road and even numbers are on the east side of the same road. Too, in my husband's SUV, he has an overhead, automatic "compass device" that tells him what direction he is going plus the temperature. I wish that I had that aid in my cheaper, older car. I'm like you. I could get lost just going around the block. lol

If you live in any country in the north hemisphere as the USA, you'll see the sunrise on the east, you'll see the sun at noon on the south, and the sunset on the west.
You'll never see the sun on the north, Only if you live in the south hemisphere of the planet, like Australia, Argentina, etc.....

Picture a clockface. Now picture it lying on the ground, so you're looking down at it.

Make 12 o'clock north, 3 o'clock is east, 6 o'clock is south, and 9 o'clock is west.

When you drive, the clockface stays with you - you're always in the center of it.

When you start out, let's say you're going toward 12 o'clock - you're going north.

You make a left turn - toward 9 o'clock - so now you're going west.

You hang a u-turn, now heading toward 3 o'clock, so you're going east.

Just keep that clock face in your mind.

Very Very Easy.

Look at the map.
Familiarize yourself with the map.
When you drive, picture your car travelling along that map and forget about looking at landmarks.

I mean totally forget about the existence of landmarks for navigation. Just use the mental image of your car running along on the map.
