I'm surprised at how protective I feel when somebody bashes Catholicism here at R & S.
I didn't have bad experiences growing up Catholic (there was one mean nun, but that's it). It's just that I'm just too skeptical to believe.
I'm 99.999999999999% sure I'm going to die an atheist.
But is it weird that I still have a connection to Catholicism?

Rosie - "Once a Catholic, always a Catholic". That rings so true. I still feel like a "brother". I can't explain it. The constant bashing here has awakened those feelings. It's a little weird.

Yes, Peter O, I still feel like I'm part of the community. Specially, lately. The R & S section here is sure affecting me. LOL

You're always defensive of your heretige. You can still be culturally Catholic even if you don't believe. Plus, I'm sure you still have loved ones or friends who are Catholic. Or perhaps a favorite Grandparent who passed away that was a proud catholic.

It's kind of like an Irish-American being defensive of Ireland even though their ancestors have been in the US for generations.

Not weird at all. Many people find that even if they don't agree with a church they still find a sense of peace in the rituals and structure. chances are even though you consider your self an atheist you still have the same basic values you had growing up. The same moral compass. That tends to follow us. I come from a family with a strong military background I get pissed when people bash our military. I have never served but I carry that from my upbringing. You may never loose that connection.

Not much wrong with the theory of do unto others, let he cast the first stone etc, there is some good stuff there. Unfortunately, like most religions, it gets judged by the actions of the worst of its followers, not the message it is trying to send. gets a lot of bad press for being forgiving of heinous crimes (when the perpetrator is genuinely remorseful), something I struggle with as well. But hey, their club, their rulebook. Don't like it, don't be a member.

I think it's mature to feel that way. You're a person that disagrees with someone's beliefs, but still respects those beliefs and WANTS them to have a good experience. Most people who bash are just trying to make others have a bad experience. It's usually a sign that they're uncomfortable with their own decisions.

You're showing you are mature in your beliefs. That's a major plus!

I do not think it is weird at all for you to have a soft spot for Catholicism.

I think you are a bit different from most ex-Catholic atheists, most of whom seem to have an axe to grind.

I personally think Atheists are people of great faith.

They believe the entire wonderful universe came into being all by itself from the smallest subatomic particle to the most immense galaxy and from the amazing complexity of the human mind to the love between a mother and child.

I find it much easier to believe that an all powerful and all loving God is behind it all.

I do not have enough faith to be an Atheist.

With love in Christ.

it might be that your catholic relatives, possibly parents(i don't know your situation) beckon you to defend or be offended towards catholic issues whether positive or negative. i am roman catholic and would hope your feelings draw you back to the faith,if not so be it. i don't think what you are going through is weird, i am irish and have been in america for some time now, whilst at my core i am irish i still find myself being annoyed or being defensive towards the typical stereotypes people have towards americans. i'll never stop being irish, maybe you shouldn't stop being catholic.......peace and no offence this is my humble opinion.

I too have a soft spot for Catholicism and I was protestant lol
but I can relate to them in many ways and I have never had a Catholic speak to me with anything but love

but we should defend anyone who needs defending when needlessly bashed

Why die an atheist...why not come home to Catholicism? Atheists are firm in the belief about there being no God...the Catholic Church is an absolute....people love it because it means what it says and it says what it means. Both groups are absolutes in their own way.

Sooooooo....grew up Catholic, did ya? From today forward you are mine in my prayers and in my Eucharists. You can introduce yourself to me in Heaven and say thanks then. You can also point fellow atheists to the way Home via their Catholic Home on earth.

I've only been Catholic for eight years, and already I can see how it gets in one's blood. Or maybe you are just a half-way decent person who recognizes the injustice of outrageous lies and baseless attacks. ;)

No because religion is a cultural phenomenon and there is a lot of community there.
