Confrontation, you need to sit down with your family and tell them that there is no offence here, but first talk tio your mother, she is an important person in your life and ask her (if she really is) whay she is stealing.

No of course it's not mean I have done the same to some of my partners family and it doesn't matter weather it's a $5 or $100 item. What kind of person does that anyway?? Your family should be the people you can trust the most. So you really need to get it out in the open and let your mum and brothers know what your concerns are.

What kind of family steals from each other???
It's not mean... at all. It's called repsecting each others' right to privacy and their own space. Change the locks, and don't answer the phones for a while when you are at home too.
If they steal, I'd find a new family... seriously.

No you are not being mean, it's a tough situation to be in with someone as close as your mother. If I were in your place I would handle the situation as you are, exactly as you are. Always be at home when they are there, if you know they steal from you for a fact, don't let them be alone or always have someone there you trust watching them too. Don't feel like you are being rude or mean to your mother, she's the one being mean to you.

i don't understand why they feel the need to be in your home w/o you in the first place. what kind of excuses could they have that would sound legitimate? i see nothing wrong with your rule. my family wouldn't even think about doing that. stick to your guns. it's your home and they have no need to be there unless they're invited.

You are right to refuse to let them in your house when you are not there. Whether they are theives or not, they don't belong there without you being home.
