Do some research on it. You'll find however that Madison, WI will be on the list and likely for the last several years. I recall that it was listed as the safest city to live in just a few years ago.

Upstate NY i live just outside a smaller city (Utica) and about half way between to large cities (Syracuse and Albany) I wouldn't suggest living right in any city if you have kids the schools arnt great but the schools in the subburbs are usually very good at least here they are.

when evaluating safety, is this just crime, or do you consider weather and earthquakes? How about air and water pollution? Each survey has a different criteria.

Aurora Colorado, suburb of Denver, comes in high on many surveys. so does Fargo North Dakota. As does Madison WI.

I live in New Orleans, if safety is your concern, stay away. The crime here is all drug dealers killing each other. It is really pretty safe crime wise, (unless you buy crack). The real danger is from the Army Corps of Engineers. Their poor administration of our levees has made this a dangerous place to live. (Yes I live above sea level).
