Or do you think he might find it to be a mockery?

I do not think Jesus would approve of self-flagellation. Considering it is a sin to destroy life and harm others, would it not be considered a sin to do so to yourself? As a Catholic I know that there is a history of it in my religion, but this is one thing I do not agree with.....If I am to suffer for Christ I will do so by giving of my time and energy.....I see no good in beating oneself and I do not believe a kind and loving God would approve either.....
Peace be with you.

This is a great question! NT writers were aware, as was Jesus, of zealots of various kinds. John the Baptist was a religious aesetic, for example. Jesus doesn't comment on them, nor did the writers of the NT it seems. From that very limited "evidence" I assume that those caught up in religious fervency were a part of the accepted culture not requiring comment. This makes me think that while Jesus does not seem to have been engaged in that behavior, he would not have thought it odd, or objectionable.

But that reading a lot into silence as it were.

hell no.

and as far as mockery goes, it is only mockery if the people who do it do so mocking him.

many people do this because they think they need to suffer (Catholics) Jesus came to give us life and life more abundantly! How the hell does damaging the body (remember treating the body as a temple?) help you to relate with Jesus or His pain anymore?

His real pain was from being separated from Father and not really from the pain he suffered by being tortured. although that probably hurt a whole lot

I, of course, don't know, but I would guess He'd think anyone doing that would be pretty dense. He said to drink the wine and eat the bread in remeberance of Him, He didn't say anything about beating oneself. No one would actually do this to themselves out of mockery, it's painful. Just ignorance.

Mockery, that's what we have Christians for in the first place.

He'd be ashamed that someone would do that in his name.
