I just got him today, i didn't notice it at the pet store but when i got him home i saw that his nail was broken and had some dry blood on it. I left him in his cage and came back about 20 minutes later and saw the the entire nail just came off and some blood on the cage. Will his nail grow back to normal? Also, my other birds don't like him the first ten minutes were filled with rejection. None of my other keets want him anywhere near. Should I seperate them or is just normal?

Birds tend to lose nails in the weirdest ways. Some species will bite off their enemies nails (Lovebirds are well known for this as are some conures and the larger parrots) while others will get them hooked on something then lose them while freaking out. In most cases the nail will grow back though it may look a bit different. My one cockatiel has a nail that is tiny and looks more like a human nail than a claw.

Your new bird should be quaranteened before introducing him/her to your established flock. At absolute minimum it should be 2 weeks though 3 weeks is ideal. The only exceptions to this is if the bird comes from a source you absolutely trust or if the bird has been bred in your aviaries.

Expect some arguing between the established birds and the new comer for the first few weeks. Budgies can be grumpy little turds and will bicker, bite toes and pull feathers to make a point. Once the new comer has lost their 'new bird' allure, things should tone down. That can take as little as a week to as long as two to three months. In my experience, the adjustment period is closer to a month. You can put the new bird in a cage and place it beside the resident birds' cage. After 2-3 days you can place the new bird in with the resident ones. If you have a really huge cage you can place the new bird's cage inside the one all the birds will live in.

It depends on the severity of the nail damage. One of my cockatiels lost a nail due to a swivel-chair accident and it grew back somewhat normally.. a little stunted and white (the rest of her nails are black), but otherwise normal. If the internal part of the nail has been too seriously damaged, the nail may not grow back at all.

You should keep the new bird in a separate cage nearby, so everyone can get used to each other. Once they all seem to have gotten used to the new bird, you can introduce him to the cage with everyone else.

Keep them separated. You should always quarantine new birds for 30 days in case they have an infection or virus. You don't want to wipe out your whole flock! Then, put cage near the others and gradually move further together. The nail may or may not grow back, depends on if the nail bed was damaged. Keep an eye on it for infections and seek treatment if needed.

I accidentally cut my conure's nail WAY too short, which caused bleeding. It took a long time but it finally grew back to normal...so I would also assume so with the keet. If the others start to bully the new guy separate him and buy a nice female for him to keep each other company.

i recommend separating him. And with the bleeding, If it bleeds again, allow him to run around in flour. It stops the bleeding, and it's also comfy to the bird. The blood vessel broke just like the nail, so I'm not sure if it will grow back or not. Go to the vet and ask about your bird. I hope it is okay.
