I think most of us have a level of compassion that would cut off the punishment pretty early on. Why then isn't this deity that's worshipped at least as compassionate?

He is that compassionate.

At the risk of scorn from other Christians everywhere, I personally believe in a basically universal salvation. The only people who go to hell are those that choose to out of pride, stubborness or hate.

From the view of Christianity doesn't this make sense? If God loved us so much to die for our sins why would he want us to suffer forever for them cause we weren't Christian on earth? There are literally billions of people on the planet who have not been baptized because they have never really heard of it or christ? Sherpas in the Himalayas? Why would God punish them for not being Christian when Christianity has never been preached to them? And what about Allah and those that never had the chance to join islam? (Ex. An eight year old that Dies in the ghettos of the Phillipines raised christian?)

Thats the great secret. God loves us too much to condemn us FOREVER. Our sins carry with them their own consequences and guilt and if we admit our fault and change we are forgiven.

I am a Christian but don't see why a loving God would condemn someone for an eternity cause they weren't baptised.

If there is a loving God in heaven, he loves us too much to see us unhappy for billions of years for some mistakes we made in the seventy difficult, uncertain years we were here. We place a whole lot of importance on ourselves and take ourselves way too seriously.

If you were a judge and your son was a serial killer and even killed your other children, would you not be FORCED(by your son's actions) to make a choice between your feelings for your son who is a serial killer, your remaining children and the rest of society? Would you not, because of your position have to judge correctly and not show favortism just because he is your son?Would locking him up in prison for life or putting him on "death row" not be just? Would not justice have to be carried out in spite of how compassionate you are and how much you love your son? What if you arranged a way whereby he would not have to die for his crimes if he would only agree to be good and live in accordance to the law but he still refused?

The Bible says that God is "not willing that ANY should perish but that ALL should come to repentance."(2 Peter 3:9)KJV

God does NOT want anyone to suffer eternally, which is why God sent His very own Son, Jesus, to pay the price for mankind's souls. God continuously reaches out to those who reject Him, patiently waiting and hoping that they will change their minds and join HIS side.

Eternal suffering-the torment people will feel when they see that they have(of their own choice) missed out on God's offer of eternal life, through Jesus-of Heaven- is not what God wants but He will not force people to accept Him. I have heard some preachers say that the torment will be like a haunting, having to remember all the times God tried to reach you throughout your life but you laughed and pushed Him away.

We all have souls that live on after death. It's just where you go after death that is up to you now.

No, God does not want anyone to miss Heaven. Remember-"Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved- you and your household"(Acts 16:31)NIV

I would definitely not want my son to suffer eternally. But, ultimately, it's not up to me - it's between him and God.

Edit: And God is compassionate. We cause our own pain.

Don't all good parents turn their backs on their own children when they disappoint them?

If my child rejected me I would certainly NOT want him to suffer for it. I would assume some fault in myself.

If he rejected me, it would be his choice. It would hurt me, but in the end, he must live his life as he sees fit. Why punish him for his choices?

As to your second question: the answer is that this "god" does not exist. He is made up by man. How better to ensure that people follow him than to threaten them with eternal damnation if they don't?

Hello, my kid rejects me sometimes(especially after taco night,or I had too many milk products, I haven't been to the ol' beauty parlour in a while, or I get something wrong or something stuck in my teeth[like hairs from my bf]) The moment I cut the kid from my pocketbook that kid remembers who I am.

This has been asked and answered, I believe. You're referring to "hell fire" correct?

Many do not know what hell is. Hell, Hades, Sheol, is the common grave for mankind.

Before you ask a question on this forum i would suggest doing a search on the forum first on "hell" because it's been asked and answered too many times.

You should go here to http://www.watchtower.org and type in the search box "hell". There you will get honest answers that always refer to scriptures and you will know what hell is.

Sometimes when i see these questions they weight me down so much because we keep repeating ourselves but it seems no one is really listening or rather 'PAYING ATTENTION'.

Pay Attention, ok?

Actually, I have two sons and, at least on some level, I expect that they will reject me. It won't be until they are on their own and discovering the world, perhaps have kids themselves, that they will think back on it and question what they were thinking.

I don't expect my sons to take me solely at my word, either. When they think that Dad's blowing smoke, I invite them to do the research for themselves and at least figure out why I think what I think.

It was very compassionate for God to manifest in the flesh to take the punishment for us.

In your hypothetical, if the son were to continue to reject the compassion of his parent(s), then anything that happened to him would be his own doing, not theirs. They would grieve, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't have to face the consequences of his actions.

No, I'd be too hurt to be able to even think of that. Just because he rejected me doesn't mean I would stop loving him or hoping that he would come back.
