The name of that picture is "RAISING THE FLAG ON IWO JIMA" and was taken by Joe Rosenthal. Six Marines of Easy Company--IRA HAYES, FRANKLIN SOUSLEY, RENE GAGNON, JOHN BRADLEY, MICHAEL STRANK, & HARLON BLOCK--raised this (the 2nd flag, actually. Navy Secretary requested the first one as a souvenir) flag on MT. SURIBACHI on Feb. 23, 1945 after 4 days of fighting and 40% casualties. Strank, Block, and Sousley died within 24 days after the picture was taken. At battle's end, 5 men out of a platoon , and 27 out of a company of 250 had survived. The Japanese Army had 20,000 casualties out of 22,000 soldiers.
IRA HAYES, a Pima Indian from Arizona, couldn't take the honors he received or the recognition he was given afterwards (he was just doing his duty and following orders, he once said), and died an alcoholic in 1955 at age 32.
"SANDS OF IWO JIMA", a movie starring John Wayne, was made in 1949. When he got his star at Grauman's Chinese Theater, the cement used was made from the black sand found at Iwo Jima.
