aww bless, they are so adorable aren't they? I've got a lhasa apso, which are very similar and mine absolutely adores babies and children! She's not so sure of them in the shreiking stages though, but there again we haven't got any children - she just loves it when we have visitors with kids. We make sure she gets lots of attention when kids are here, so that she doesn't get jealous. I'd assume Shi Tzu's are the same. Incidentally, is the one at the shelter male or female?
I groom mine regularly - she has a bath every week or fortnight and thoroughly combed through. I keep her fur about three inches long and she doesn't mault.

I have 3 shih tzus and they are the most wonderful dogs ever. They are great with children and love to be around people. I have kept their hair long but it requires a lot of work. They go to the groomer every 2 weeks. Most people get them trimmed but I like their long hair. They hardly shed at all. They are one of a few breeds with hair folicles and not fur. You will love him. I am surprised you were able to find one in a shelter as they are usually taken as soon as they come in.

Shih Tzu's are awesome with children!!! They area wonderful companions & very, very smart dogs as well. I had one growing up for 16 years & she was the best dog ever. They hardly shed at all, you may find a small little ball of fur here & there, but nothing major. The only downfall is they have leaky eyes. They tend to get messy at times & may even have to have that area shaved by a groomer. We kept our Shih Tzu very short because their hair tends to get very knotted. Unless you intend to show him, take him to the groomer for a short puppy cut.
Now get, go get that cutie & good luck!

Same as golden gal said. Was a breeder and with very few exceptions these are great loving family dogs. The thing to watch for on these is keeping the fur near the tear ducts trimmed as to prevent eye problems by irritating them.

I have never heard that they are not good with children. They are basically lap dogs that love to be loved. They give the love right back also. They dont shed much and they need to be groomed professionally every 6 months or so. They do need to be brushed ever day to keep the matt out of their fur.
I'd really consider this dog if it suits you.

I have 2! One is such a laid back, easy goin fella. The other one is a rescued boy. Unfortunately he was horribly abused, and can be temperamental. I keep them both puppy cut due to my allergies. But they are entertaining to beat the band. They love attention especially from children. They are not noisy and easily trained. Good luck!!
