I am living in a residence hall, and there is a festival going on nearby. It is so loud that I can clearly hear the music with the windows shut even really late at night, i.e. 3 am and later. I don't want to sleep with ear plugs because I always get headaches with those and I don't want to take sleeping pills because I always feel groggy the next day after taking them. Do you have any suggestions?

I talked to the guy at the front desk at the residence hall about it when it was going on last night, they got special permission to do it so there is nothing the cops could do about it. I just wish they would have gave us more than a week's notice for it, or I would have made plans to go home for the weekend, by the time I found out it would have been about a €200 trip. It is a whole weekend long thing, hopefully that means it will be over after tomorrow.

"white noise", such as a fan, or a radio in your room tuned to between stations. It might mask the noise.

I had the same problems w/dorm life! UGH! I did use ear plugs successfully, but only partly. I finally found that putting on an air cleaner or fan, blocked most of the noise. Or use noise-blocking headphones if you can sleep with them.

One thing my roommate and I did to the noisy people (when they wouldn't stop after several requests), was wake THEM up (banging pots and paps on their door, shouting) at 5 AM a few times! THAT really put a dent in their partying!

I don't screech, but if I can't sleep then I stare at the ceiling. I toss and turn and try to get comfy or I try to think of what the shadows around me could be, kinda like an i-spy game. If that doesn't work I start humming to myself. Then before I realize it I start singing out loud and the next thing I know I get hit by a pillow my sister threw because I woke her up.. :)

I live in a condo and sometimes in the summer I can hear noises and the way I sleep is with an air cleaner turned on high and I get used to the air cleaner's noise and don't hear the other noise.......as a matter of fact I can't sleep without the air cleaner's noise now......also a fan running helps.

1. drink milk or eat bananas....anything with tryptophan (sp), its a substance that is like one produced by your body to make you sleepy
2. White noise fan
3. Low background, soothing music
4. Excercise so that you're tired
5.Don't have lots of caffeine
6. Sleep over at someone else's house
7. You may have to give in and wear earplugs

you could turn some relaxing quiet music on yourself, to make you think about that

or have you got a family member or friends house that you go to for the night or something

try reading a book,

maybe tell the police that its a disturbance call, maybe they could do something about it

good luck and i hope you have a good sleep

Buy an electric fan and turn it to high. The sound is very soothing and should block out the noise.

read a lot. don't eat, becuase that will keep you up. try and be lazy to make yourself tired, but keep yourself occupied and keep your mind off the noise. good luck. hope you get some shut eye.
