i just bought a notebook. i got it from a known and trusted store. it's brand-new and pre-installed with windows vista. i'm positve the notebook and softwares are genuine and so is the product key sticker at the bottom. but when i type-in the product key to activate microsoft office, it's invalid. i've re-checked over and over and certain i got the correct numbers and letters. why is this happening? anyone go thru this too? and know why? thanks. (can't call for tech support right now)

The product key on the bottom of the computer is probably just for activating Windows. Office would have its own key. Look for CD-ROMs that came with your laptop -- there should be at least one for if you ever needed to reinstall Microsoft Office. There should be a sticker on the envelope, case, or very thin box that CD is in, and the key you need to activate office should be on it.

There is a differnece in the product key for Vista itself and the product key for the Office application. One is Windows..the other runs in Windows. Beyond that it sounds
like a pirated/bogus/illegal copy. Hope this is helpful information.

Take it back to the store and ask them to activate Windows for you.
