I'm about to be deployed on July 5 for the Navy. I already went to Mepps and everything and chose my job. I had a low asVAB score of 43 so my options were really limited. I chose to become a boatswain mate but on what people tell me. The job is not what I am really looking forward into. The jobs that were offered to be were really limited due to my low score. I wish to retake the asVAB test and to rechoose a job but my recruiter said I can't because IF I score a lower score on the next test, it will affect me. I really want to switch jobs before I get deployed, is it possible?

I know I can retake the asVAB in 2 years after service but im just wondering if I can take it before the 2nd time I visit Mepps and before I get deployed because I don't want to waste 2 years of my life doing something I don't want to do

you are NOT deploying, you are shipping out to attend Bootcamp. HUGE difference.

Your recruiter is correct.. if you take it again and score lower, you could lose your BM slot and end up with even fewer choices.. or score yourself right out of eligibility altogether.

you cannot switch rates in Boot Camp. have you put in a DAR for another rate you do qualify for? you can try that, but there is no guarentee that a slot willopen up by the time you ship out.

You can always switch jobs in the military. You can even switch branches... like let's say you don't want to be a seaman any longer... join the chairforce (airforce) for short. I prefer the airforce. Or you could be a marine... MAYBE... depends on your testing scores. You can always retest for something else. It's definately allowed. You just have to get in good with your commanding officer and recruiter. Get some recommendations... HURRY UP!

Actually until you actually in process into your basic training station you dont have to do anything. I would recommend being stern with your recruiter and get the job you want, becuase youll be stuck doing it for a few years. Your recruiter is just going to try to get you to ship out and be done with it so he can add another recruit to his list. Trust me they did a similar thing to me, dont let the high pressure intimidate you.

Apply yourself study your tail off.
When you strike for boatswain mate. You can apply for other rates but that depends on you studying and taking the test while in the military.

you can retake those parts of the asvab that you need to improve on and then request a switch of rates.
