It is difficult to describe but the "a" sounds are different. If you want to hear an accent if you can watch the reruns of Mad About You. Mark, on the best friends of the main characters, is originally from Chicago. Much of the way he talks in this show is just his personality but you can also hear some of the Chicago accent.

You can also go to the city's website and listen to the mayor speak. He has a Chicago accent.

I'm from Chicago and now living in California. People can pick up my accent because they say my 'A's are heavy...example...ham would be haam....they say I make a 1 syllable word into 2 if there's a heavy A in it. Also when I start talking quickly th's become d's....them is dem , those is dose. It's funny now because since I've been out here so long I can pick up on Chicago accents now too. Personally I think it's a GREAT accent!

I have friends in CA who have more of a "valley" accent, like a surfer would talk, "dude", this & "whoa", that. When I speak to them, they say I have an accent & I say "Chicago" more like "SHKAGO", almost sounding nasal. As far as NY, a bit close to the Chicago accent, but more rough & tuff guy. Some syllables are more accented. Make sense?

Chicago is midwest accent like most of television reporters use. The word Chicago is pronounced distinctly. They also say Joliet with a T at the end rather than the French pronunciation I am used to from Wisconsin.

And they say Da Bears.

For starters.. all of us from Chicago are from the midwest. So we have the most standard accent for the united states. Most news anhors have to talk with the midwest accent. Ny has more of a nasal sound to everything. The guys try to act tough with the accent. Also with chicago accent, we use ahh for our A's. Example -- CHI C(AHH) GO, we also have the best city in the world

I've lived in the Chicago suburbs my entire life. We only live about 20 minutes away. I don't talk like them. I would say most people don't talk like that. In fact, I think it sounds funny!

I have had some great friends from both of those States. I would say the people in New York, always add the "A" sound to the end of there words. Like here are some examples of what my friends say.
Chicago friend....Water heater...New York friend....WATA Heata
C-friend..Heather
NYC friend..Heatha
They are both cool in there own wayz....

Chicagoans don't have an accent, since we speak the mainstream. If you listen to newsmen, singers, actors/actresses who are born natural citizens, you will here the same pronounciation that we speak and the same pronounciation that you will find in the dictionary.

It is easy to understand, so you should feel welcome to visit and stay! Have a great time!

we pronounce our a's as an ah sound
most people pronounce it aw.

then of course we usually end our sentences with a preposition as in "what is the purpose of it" instead of "with what is its purpose" or something like that.

then of course little habits we are not aware of can leave tell tale signs.
