i asked this question also, and i was amazed at how much guinea pigs really do need a partner.
it's best to do plenty of research on an animal before you get it, that way you know what you're getting into.
it's ALWAYS best for the guinea pig to have a cage mate, they are social animals and really do need another guinea there.
once you get another one you'd be amazed at how quickly their moods pick up and watching them play is so much fun.
oh, and dont worry that having another one will cost more, because having 2 costs just as much as having 1, you may have to clean up a little more from where they play and throw the bedding around, but other than that, you're not going to spend extra money having 2 unless you choose to (like toys and treats and such)
good luck, and please, for the sake of your guinea, get another.

Absolutely! Guinea pigs do their very best when housed with a same sex buddy. They really need the interaction from each other & will get very lonely if they don't have a friend. No matter how much you play with your piggie, you can't play with her 24/7. Her buddy will fill in that time in between. May I suggest adopting from a local shelter or rescue? You can find one near you at www.petfinder.com.
Caring for two piggies is not much more expensive than caring for one. Just make sure they have a cage that is big enough. Check out www.guineapigcages.com for some really cool ideas on cages you can build yourself! They are so much easier to clean too!
Good for you for wanting what's best for your piggie!

Guinea pigs thrive when they are with others of their kind. They are herd animals in nature. You can't be there 24/7, so a friend for your pig is a great idea! However, you need to consider that you may have extra expenses like vet bills and food costs. When I got my second, my veggie bill went up about 25%. However, it is worth it!

Yes your darling pig will live longer if she has a friend. She won`t get bored as easily and she will have a companion to talk and play with. Before you get your second pig take into consideration that two pigs require more time and care.
Make sure you don`t get a male pig or you will have more pigs than you can deal with.
Good luck. Pigs are great pets and friends.

I think any guinea pig would be happy with a companion. They are hurd animals and will do better with a friend. Although be ready to slowly introduce them... and make sure they have a large enough cage for two cavies. One guniea is no more trouble then two. A 2x4 C&C cage is perfect.

They have a great forum too. Good Luck!!

Guinea pigs are "herd" animals and do better as pairs or in a group. I would recommend getting another female so you wouldn't have to worry about an accidental breeding.

i have a guinea pig. and i have had her for a year now. and i tried to get her a friend. and since she was alone for a while she didnt get along with the friend. they actually get more aggresive if u get them a friend. you have to get them one when they are just babies. very very young so they grow. and make sure if u do get a new one have more then one person check to make sure its the same sex cause they told me they were both girls. and a couple months later my guinea pig was popping out babies

if she's on her own, yes get her a friend. guinea pigs are very social animals and get lonely on their own. i'm not sure if there will be dominance problems between females, so it would be best to get a younger female so that she doesn't feel threatened. and don't get a rabbit as Lucky above me suggested! rabbits hurt guinea pigs - they end up kicking them and can even kill them! please get another guinea pig!

As long as you're sure it's a female, get another female. The older she gets the less likely she'll accept a cage-mate. Two males will fight violently.
