From a person selling their own car, not a dealer. Look for someone selling a car for a little more, around $2000-2200.
You should be able to get somebody down to $1500

Look for an older Buick or Oldsmobile from a private party, not a dealer, with low miles on it. They have very low resale value so you might be able to find one for $1500 if you look around a bit.

Or your local newspaper.
Maybe eBay if you can find one that's local.
Whatever you do get it checked by a mechanic BEFORE you buy.
