Keep your hamster in an enclosure with some baby ducks. He will eventually think that he is also a duck and learn to spread his toes apart to paddle better.
Cover his little body fur with greasy bacon fat. He will glide faster through the water to keep up with his new "brothers".
Tell all of your friends about training your hamster to swim. Maybe one of them will finally phone the ASPCA.
PEOPLE!!! IT'S A JOKE QUESTION AND A JOKE ANSWER. Didn't you read my last line saying call the ASPCA? Are 9 people here too stupid to understand what that means? 9 people gave me a thumbs down for being sarcastic to this joke question.
9 of you are idiots!
Make that 10. Perhaps British people don't know the ASPCA.. American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

It is extremely important that you research before getting any animal. You should purchase the cage and some of the food that it is currently eating, bedding (such as shavings or pellets), water container, exercise wheel, etc. and set it up BEFORE you go get it. You will want to feed it whatever the breeder or store is currently feeding it, then if you chose to change food types or brands, add it very slowly to its current food and slowly reduce the food that it is eating now. The pet store or breeder will be able to tell you how much to feed it, but also the packaging is usually a good guide line. For hamsters *this does not apply to all animals* I will usually just let it eat as much as it wants to and always have food and fresh water available. If you want your hamster to thrive, you can give it fresh veggies *carrots, lettuce, etc* but if you do this, you will have to change the cage more regularly *at least every other day* I would not suggest letting it swim. If you are set on doing so, make sure that the water is shallow enough that it can stand if it needs to and never leave it unattended for even a second

First of all I question as to why you want to teach it to swim. It does not need to. Plus you are exposing it to a fearful situation for a hamster to be in just so you can see it swim.
Hamsters know how to swim by nature. They do not need to be taught, but they are poor swimmers and must paddle very hard to get anywhere.
A warm shallow bath once in a while is fine. Keeping in mind that hamsters get sick easily and must be dried off well as soon as they are removed from the water.
I suggest (FOR YOUR HAMSTER'S SAKE) you leave the swimming to humans.

Stop letting your hamster swim right away. You don't put any hamster in water whether to swim or give a bath to. They are desert animals and can become very ill from the water including getting hypothermic and die from being put in water. These little guys only need to be given a sand bath using chinchilla sand. They can easily get respiratory infection if the inhale any amount of water into their lungs. You may not even realize their sick until you find them dead.

Hamters are not supposed to swim !
They do NOT like water at all, only for drinking.
They wash themselves like a cat, so you don't have to bathe them...
Plus, putting them in water can give them a deadly disease called wet tail. It starts with diarrhea, then ends with death. I'm sorry to say, but that is very dangerous, and you should stop immediatly.
As long as you stop now, your hammie should be okay.
And don't feel guilty, it's not your fault, you didn't know...
But why did you want to teach your hamster how to swim anyway???

I would hope this is a joke?
Hamsters are from the deserts of syria, they are not water creatures. You will infact kill your hamster by doing this.

Why do you need to teach your hamster how to swim? Unfortunately, only some hamsters can swim and if you try to teach yours and water gets into its ears it can die.
