what is a carrier access code?

when i try calling my aunt (long distance), a recording comes on that says its neccessary to dial a carrier access code for the number you have dialed....
what does this mean!!

You don't specify where you are calling from and how (country, cell line or land line, calling card, etc.), so this is a guess: the carrier does not know where to charge the call.
