I am not a vet, but I have three cats. When cats groom themselves the barbs on their tongues cause the hair to be ingested. They throw up at times in an attempt to eliminate a hairball. There is a paste that You can purchase at many stores that is used to prevent and to help eliminate hairballs. I saw one of my cats trying to throw up.....they make this gagging noise and their bodies are kinda rocking back and forth....so I got the paste and gave all of them some. My oldest female cat later threw up some hair that I could not even believe the size of it.....I know gross. If the obstruction grows too large surgery can become necessary. But that has never happened with ours.

I just went and read in my cat book.....Cat Love by Pam Johnson. It says that Cats vomit occasionally. If there are no other symptoms then there is probably no need to be concerned. Reasons for vomiting...hairballs...eating too fast.....anxiety......food that is too cold. It says to check the vomitus for blood...string...or foreign material. Persistent vomiting means something is wrong.

Other more serious causes include, disease, internal parasites, gastritis, obstructions, or poisoning.

To treat....withold all food and most water for about eighteen to twentyfour hours, to give the stomach a rest. Using a dropper administer 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Kaopectate or Pepto-Bismol, (that is what it says). Do it from the side of the mouth, and administer slowly....giving liquids too quickly can cause the liquid to be forced into the lungs. Repeat every eight hours for twenty four hours. Then in 18 to 24 hours You can allow bland food like strained-meat baby food.

Hope everything goes well. Hopefully it is just a hairball.

One of my cats (I have 2 also) used to throw up all of the time. You may want to bring them to the vet for a check-up. It could be nothing or it could be something serious. When was the last time you had bloodwork done for them?
What has worked for my cat is a 1/4 tablet Prilosec daily and Eukenoba low residue food. The vet told me that this is what she did for her cat. But I recommend bringing your cat to the vet because it could be something else. Also my cat is pretty big (maine coon). She seems to be gaining weight even though I don't think she's eating more. It must be because she's not throwing up at least 2-3 times a day anymore. Actually, it wasn't like that until recently, it was once or twice every 3-5 days. My other cat rarely throws up. But also the vomit tells a story too. Does it look like undigested food or is there more liquid? Is there hair mixed in? If there is hair, combing them every day will help greatly, which is what I do. It doesn't take that long. I have long haired cats. It takes me no more than 3 minutes to comb them both. They love it. Hope this helps.

It's probably food that isn't the right balance for them. Too much fat will make them sick among other ingredients.

Try a good quality brand that has Sensitive Digestion or hairball formula, like Science Diet or IAMS.

Also if they have parasites or hairballs they will throw up.

Make sure you are brushing them everyday to help remove excess fur.

My guess would be they have parasites since they were in a shelter around other animals that probably had parasites. So get the vet to give you worming meds. Don't use the store brands as they only kill 1 or 2 types of worms. Cats and dogs can have 100's of different type of worms. You want to kill all of them as they can spread to humans also.

It depends on what you are feeding them. Did you know that they put the oil from cooking fries in fast food restaurants in most pet foods? Thats why pets always get sick. The best way to have a healthy cat is to feed it raw fish and let it hunt its own food. Cats in nature don't cook there food, so it only makes sense to give them raw food right? Only fish, because cats don't hunt cows or pigs. No chicken or turkey because they carry salmonella.

I don't know the cure for them, but what they have sounds pretty bad. Try to look for a natural medicine for them or something. I hope they make it.

Cats who keep throwing up need to be seen by a vet. It may not be anything serious, but until you know what it is you won't be able to treat it. Frequent vomiting can also cause dehydration which will make them even sicker.

It's possible that their diet isn't right for them, in which case you may need to experiment. DON'T give kitties milk, though. This can cause problems with many cats.

Best thing is to get them to a vet.

Hairballs!
Brush them every day, and give them hairball remedy treats.
If they don't like being brushed, do a fewstrokes a day, quickly, followed immediately by the treats.
You can also put a gob of vaseline on the roof of their mouth, which will help scour out the hairballs, but your cat will not appreciate it.
Don't feed them table food - just cat food.

Have you had them checked by the vet yet?? Shelters are a great place to adopt a cat, but because of the number of animals sheltered there your cats could have been exposed to any number of diseases.

They may have a problem with whatever you are feeding them. Try an holistic food. It's easier on their tummies or a good quality food for cats with sensitive stomachs.
