Well, if your neighbour had his dog under control and on his property none of this would have happened, so he's actually liable for everything, the whole lot. Check the laws where you live and quote them too.

It has ZERO to do with your cat being outside or off the leash since it happened on YOUR property.

Write them a letter stating that whoever saw this happen, and that they are to pay not only the vet's bill, but that they are going to be reported to Animal Control for this too.

Have no mercy - they sure didn't. It does not take a brain surgeon to keep a dog on one's property, and if they cannot scrap together the sense for that they should not have any pet.

I'm sorry about your cat. It should have been able to have been outside in safety - not locked up inside just in case a dog isn't controlled.

Since they keep calling the cops for the dog playing with the cats right? If its starting to annoy you call the cops and see how the neighbors feel about having the cops called on them. If you don't want to do that go over to the neighbors house with some cookies or brownies and have a chat or debate or some type of conversation about the cats coming into your yard and if they aren't convinced then either move or find out how they are getting in.

They shouldn't pay SOME of the bill! They need to pay all of it! There are leash laws and people who just don't listen to them and do what they will need to have consequences! You shouldn't have to get a second job to pay it off! And they didn't even apologize?! No. Don't let this go. Make them pay off the entire bill and apologize. If they don't then take them to court. It's not right to let them get away with something that would've never happened in the first place.

You can take the neighbors to small claims court. It is illegal almost everywhere for a dog to run freely in a community. It is somewhat sticky in legal terms as the dog did not directly injure the cat. Having to appear in court may make them think twice about their control of their dog.

At any rate they must definitely be reported to animal control in your area for breaking the law. They might receive a warning or a fine which won't help you with your money issue.

Well, if u already took a 2nd job, pay it, then quit that job.
Make sure ur neibor pays at least half of it, if they don't pay enough, u know, enough so that u can still enjoy a mere few hundred $$, then i would take it to court, and possibly sue.

Also, you could call animal control anonmosly and tell them there is a loose dog, or any other animal type athorities, and tell them the situation.

Hope I HElped!

Unfortunately, you are at fault for having the cat off leash also, so unless you made a police report and nothing to prove it was their dog, you will be responsible for the vet bill all alone. It is the chances you take when you leave a cat outside. I have an indoor/outdoor cat myself so I am not frowning on you for letting it out. It is just a hazard of the outdoors. Good luck

I think that they should apologize to you. They should also offer to help you pay the bill. If they would have had their dog on a leash it wouldnt have happened. If I were you I would say something to them about it.

i would go and talk to them, if they are approachable and then take it from there. the other way is to contact your local animal services and tell them about this loose dog running around because next time it could chase a child and they might get hurt. you could try and claim some money through the small claims court

First of all i am sorry you cat got hurt, but why was it outside in the first place? Cars hit cats all the time. That is precisely why you should keep your pet inside where it is safe. Regardless if the dog chased it or not. If it was inside it would not have gotten hurt like that. I would ask them if they would help with the bill, but really it was all your fault.
