They poop/pee when they are scared. How long have you had them? Just keep working with them every day and they'll soon get used to being handled. Just remember to be very gentle!

They are nervous and probably very young. Try taking all of the toys out of the tank and resting your hand and arm in there so they can come to you. Or rest a box in the tank and let them climb into it. If you have to pursue them herd them into a corner and scoop from below rather than grabbing them. Gerbils don't like to be grabbed from above -- from their perspective it looks like a giant hawk claw.

Definately out of fear. Once the gerbils get used to you, they more than likely will stop pooping everytime you go to pick them up.

this is normal behaviour if there scared every time they poop place them back in the tank and wait a while then pick them up again they will soon learn to trust you and learn if they poop on you they will be placed back in there tank and that's no fun for them in time this should work.

that's weird, my gerbils NEVER have done that to me. maybe they are really really scared or nervous. pick them up gently, and don't force them into your hand. but let them walk on your hand if they want to. otherwise they will always be frightened of you.

A fear response often seen in rodents. We look like King Kong to them!
