I have Sony surround sound speakers. I put RCA jacks on the speaker wire and tried to hook them up to my tv and then I tried to hook them up to my DVR. This did not work. I know I got the positive and negative correct. Is their a way to hook up surround sound speakers without a receiver. I have several DVD players; and I also have surround speakers for my computer, (power type) Can I utilize any of these to make this work. My a/v receiver went out.

What you are trying to do cannot be done. The RCA connectors for audio on your TV are all "Pre-outs". This is a line-level signal that must be amplified in order to drive a speaker and be audible.

You can buy an amplifier for cheap such as the sonic T-Amp from www.partsexpress.com. This will at least make it work although it is a temporary solution at best.

I would recommend looking through Onkyo's refurbished receiver selections on their website. They are quite good and have been know for being good quality units even though they are used.

^ That would be a good option on a tight budget.

Such systems tend to also have proprietary speaker connectors, so it's not likely that you will even be able to connect them to any proper audio receivers. Looking at one of the model numbers you listed confirms my suspicion. They're crap speakers and completely unusable with a proper audio receiver. Throw them out. Buy a 5.1 set such as the Tannoy SFX5.1 for 200 Pounds, or the Wharfdale MS-100 for 250. Both sets will blow the doors off of the Sony crap. And you can get a Pioneer VSX527 5.1 receiver for 155 Pounds. So, barely more than 400 Pounds gets you a proper 5.1 HT sound system. That's a very reasonable price, indeed.

the outputs from your DVD player do not have amps on them and therefore will not drive a speaker unless it is a powered speaker like the ones from your computer. Also unless your DVD player has 6 analog outputs (and few do) you will not get surround sound, only stereo sound. You really do need to replace your receiver.
