i believe it's yours to keep if your feeling generous you can go ask but i highly doubt the bank is just going to return the money without your consent so its prettie much yours now

It isn't yours to keep. There is probably some statute of limitations on the bank reclaiming it, but it's most likely a couple years.

That money belongs to SOMEONE. They'll probably miss it at some point, and it will be traced to where it got wrongly deposited, and the bank will take it back. If you've withdrawn it by then, they can come after you for the money, can sue you and win. Besides, as someone else said, it's the right thing to do to let them know rather than try to play games with it.

That money was probably supposed to go into someone else's account. I don't think you are legally obligated to report it, but it is the right thing to do. A bank teller deposited my whole paycheck into the wrong account once, but I caught it within a few minutes. I know I would be pretty upset if I lost my money because of the bank's mistake.

If your money was deposited into someone else's account what would you want them to do?

If you can say that you would want them to keep it, then by all means close the account and switch banks.

If you would want them to return it, then contact the bank on Monday and figure out the problem.

Good luck with the ethics!

I work for a major bank and THEY WILL FIND OUT! It may take some weeks, but they will trace it and take it back out of your account. The best thing to do for your account is to bring it to the bank's attention. Because if you spend it, when they take it back out of your account, it can overdraw you.

Isn't this a no brainer?

If it isn't your money, tell them. It is the right thing to do.
