Hi,

I'm wondering, how many miles could one travel on empty when the red light is on, on a 2005 Toyota Highlander? Approx speed 35-40 mph.

Thanks,

George

Toyota has its cars turn on the low fuel indicator when there are 3 gallons left in the tank.

I imagine a Highlander only gets about 20-25 MPG, so the maximum you would be able to go is 60-75 miles. However, to be safe, I would halve that and fill up after going a maximum of 30-35 miles.

Most cars are set to go off at about 2 gallons remaining usualy about 40-50 miles. It is not a good idea to run any vehicle that low on fuel. All the sluge that builds up in the fuel tank gets sucked up and can cause clogged filters and injectors and even distroy a fuel pump. Its like the difference of pumping water out of a lake and then starting to pump lake bottom silt.
