i used to print those darn little bat stickers for the Bacardi company for use on all their rum projects a few years ago and a rep from their corporate office (who was from the barcardi family) told me a story about Don Facundo Bacardi and the special symbolism about it. Apparently the bat, a fruit bat, which lived in the rafters of the buildings, where the rum was made, symbolizes good luck. And after several attempts at making rum, his wife noticed that on one particular batch that was aging in barrels, a bat had hung from the ceiling right over the barrel. And she said that the rum was blessed and would bring good fortune.

see attached for full story/lore on the bat.
