You absolutely must have a passport to travel outside the United States by plane and return. It is currently taking about 16 weeks to get U. S. Passport. If you pay the expedited service fee, you may get it in about 4 weeks. The website says 10 to 12 weeks...but the truth is it is taking about 16 weeks. You do not need a visa to visit Ireland. Go to the website below for complete information on how to apply for a U.S. passport. The site will tell you exactly what type of I.D. you must have and you can print out the forms you will need to fill out. Good luck.

You MUST have a passport. To get your first passport, you do need your original birth certificate and a photo id to get one. Some states have passport offices in their main post office. Some states you have to go to the court-house. They also might have their own picture taking service for passport photos. You do need a 1 X 1 1/2 inch photo of you with a white background. You also have to look straight into the camera like you are taking your driver's license or state I.D. pic. Im an American living in Egypt right now for the 2nd time. ;) good luck!

A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies the identity and nationality of the bearer. A valid U.S. passport is required to enter and leave Ireland.

No idea about the provisional license, if they will accept this. Also, it depends on how you're travelling, you will need a passport if you're flying.
Best thing to do is phone the Irish Embassy or Consulate in your country and ask them.

ooh... undecided.. there's a passport administration in Dublin airport and that they do examine for passports, yet undecided if your licence could be universal. i think of you need to examine jointly with your airline in the previous you commute to confirm.. no longer something worse than being became away on the airport!!
