I think it gets widespread news coverage when the victims are boys. Religious leaders in other denominations have abused kids (boys AND girls) but the Catholic church frequently covered up the allegations of abuse and protected the accused priests.
I also think that claims of abuse need to be examined on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes the accusations are false.

I think you mean what do we think when a priest commits sexual abuse. It's disgusting and he should go to jail, just like all other sexual predators.
