To say anything after a sneeze stems back from an old superstition. So why do it? I usually ignore it. Saying anything after a sneeze is useless. Should we also have something said after all noisy human bodily functions? Farts? Stomach growling? Creaky knees? It's a cultural habit. Nothing more.

Gesundheit- means, Health and I grew up saying it in California when we'd sneeze. I never heard God bless you till I went to school and that was a trip because we weren't raised religious. In school, you got a lot of little Christians running around talking about hell and heaven and you think, what the f are they talking about.

"Bless you" is fine.
I guess I am an atheist. I don't need anyone to bless me, and I don't think I "lose my soul" or whatever when I sneeze. But I appreciate the thought, whether I find it necessary or not. For someone to say "bless you" shows concern or consideration for me as a person, so I can appreciate that. It's a small gesture, but a well-intentioned one.
My faith or lack of it is irrelevant. For you to show concern, using any words you wish, is something I can appreciate. So if you say "bless you", I'd say "Thanks!".

nothing, which is the same thing I say to a believer in God. Sneezes are a blessing and help your system clear out stashed feelings of uptightness and contractions. And they feel wonderful. To me, most people who say things to people when they sneeze are just being glib.

God Bless You! I don't care whether you are an atheist or not, this is a silly custom. It originated because people thought that when you sneezed, you were expelling evil spirits.
Following previous comments: To my atheist friends, you ARE free to believe what you want...God has given you that ability. We (Christians) only want you to make a wise decision...

I'm an Atheist and when someone sneezes I say "Bless You".
I believe in hoping good things (blessings) happen for you.

I've wondered this too. I wouldn't really be offended if someone said "bless you" when I sneezed, but I'd rather they didn't. I'd say just ignore it. Sneezing isn't a big deal anyways.

Bless you works. It doesn't really matter, really. I'm an Atheist and I like it when people say "God, bless you". It's not that big of a deal to me.

"God bless you" is such a common reaction that we really don't mind. Some atheists say it without thinking. My wife says, "Goodness!" when somebody sneezes, I think its cute.
