What's better for a person getting their first car? My mom wants me to get manual. She said that if you learn that right away, you won't have to worry later on if you have to drive one. Which one should I pick?

I agree with your mom's reasoning. You'll probably like driving a manual better than an automatic anyway, typically younger people do. It's definitely more "fun" to shift your own gears, and it at least gives the feeling of more control over the car. Cars are also quicker with manuals compared to automatics.

There used to be a large disparity in gas mileage between auto and manual. But that is not the case anymore. If you want to be able to drive and do other tings at the same time and if you want better resale in the end you must go auto. Manual is fun for awhile and the odds are you will never need to drive a stick shift car. When you start sitting in traffic every day and you are constantly pushing the clutch in and out you will get tired of it unless you are in Europe or the middle east where they still haven't gotten the point that it is easier to drive the automatic. So being old enough to be your father buy the auto.

Your mother is correct. Learning to drive stick will help a lot in the long run if you ever have to borrow someones car that is stick.

You should definetely go manul. They are more fun to drive, and your mom is right, once you learn on a manual you wont forget it. And you can basically drive anything!

Go with the automatic with paddle shifters. You'll get the best of both worlds. (Mazda 3 and 6 have it.)

automatic is good for heavy traffic places, manuals are better on gas, and for handling

get an auto first, so you can concentrate on the traffic instead of concentrating on learning how to shift
