"There Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston
"The Stranger" by Albert Camus
"Fences", "The Piano Lesson", or anything by August Wilson
"The Little Prince" By Antoine de Sanit Exupery (It's not just for kids)
"Beloved" by Toni Morrison
"The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Attwood.

If you like Eastern philosophy at all, I would suggest "I Ching: The Book of Changes" (pronounced ee-ching). Or "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones".
