There is a technique for breaking handcuffs that uses leverage, but I'm not gonna explain it. There is a book that should be mandatory reading for law enforcement called The Tactical Edge. An illustration shows a pair of mangled handcuffs. The caption reads that the cuffs were opened by a mentally deranged man who gripped them in his teeth and pulled. What look like marks from the jaws of a vise were made by the man's teeth.

Handcuffs are very difficult ot break. However, there are a very small number of inmates in the federal system who have the strength to do this. These people are well identified by the sustem and stronger methods of movement restriction are applied when they are transported. The answer is yes, but only a small number of folks can do this.

The metal is way too tough to physically break it. Only way is to pick it. Actually, there was a video or website that showed how to do it with a small thin metal piece like off your sunglasses. Even showed how to bend the metal to fit into the hole to turn the lock mechanism. They're not infallible, but there is no chance that it could be physically pulled apart by human strength that I know of, as they're too well-built for that.

The only time I have been cuffed was by choice. I am sure there are people that can dislocate their wrists and get out.

I have yet to hear of a case where someone is strong enough to break cuffs the way you described.

At the academy we were shown several methods of picking the locks and other methods. I would never share them though!
