I know this is probably a really, really stupid question, but I just finished re-installing winXP Pro and I think I was told to format the harddrive.

Being mildly ignorant when it comes to computers (not a good thing), I reinstalled WinXP before formatting the harddrive.

I did a "New Installation" (clean installation), but some files from before I reinstalled are still on the harddrive (program files).

Now, if I do a quick format on the harddrive, will it erase my installation of XP?

quick format will completely erase your hard drive.. provided that we are talking about your C drive which is the default for your OS, then it will erase whatever you have done previously..

new installation of windows xp just overwrites your previous OS.. your programs, though not functioning anymore, will still be in program files and all crap in your C will still be there..

make sure you save first all the files you need from C to D or whatever partition you have there.. then do a format of your C and install the xp..

hope this helps..

A format will erase, but quick format option to reinstall OS is a chicken and egg dilemma, format and quick format achieves the same thing in what you ask anyway.
