Mostly I am busy with answering questions and generally do not give Thumbs up or down. Only when it is resolved I read it completely and if the best answer is worth I give thumbs up. I never differentiate it between the persons agree with me or disagree..

I take each answer for what it is & not even think about who is saying it, or what they said before. Surely we dont just want to keep our thumbs up for our favourite people. That wouldnt be right. If someone gives a great answer they'll get the thumbs up from me.
(Aflac... I remember the days when I had no thumbs, its no fun! Hope they sprout soon!)

I tend to give a lot of Thumbs Up and never give a Thumbs Down. But than again I'm a positive person.
If I don't like a statement I ignore it.

I give thumbs ups to anyone who is either respectful or funny. I guess I reward smart alleck remarks but I appreciate a good chuckle now and then. I will also thumbs up an opposing view if the case is well stated.

I do it on the merits, even if I suspect they aren't . At least I know I gave an honest answer. Plus I suspect many of the angry nuts that populate this place are actually nice people in person, so don' t begrudge them a thumbs up .

LOL! You mean like positive reinforcement? ;o)
I haven't done that. I am perfectly willing to give thumbs up to someone who answers well even if I normally disagree with them, but I've never thought of it as positive reinforcement.
I do think we should try to "catch people being nice." It's easy to be critical of others, but it's not character-building to find fault. Finding good is more of a challenge sometimes, but it's more productive to draw out someones strengths than to assault them with their failures.

Yes, whenever someone gives an answer that is not condescending, or full of insults, I often give a thumbs up, even if I do not completely agree with the content.

I do, particularly when it's a Christian who shows that they're more open minded and tolerant than the others here - in other words, when their views on Christianity are in line with what mine used to be.
I also have no compunction about doing the opposite to a fellow atheist who is just mean and nasty.

I usually give the thumb to the statement and maybe later notice who said it. There is too much cronyism on here as it is.
