There are studies showing that St. Johns Wort works and studies showing that it doesn't work.

The reason is the quality of the product. Over 90% of supplements sold over the counter at health food stores have very little or no biological activity in them.

The studies showing the efficacy of St. Johns Wart were done with a high quality extract and other companies that put an inferior St. Johns Wart in their product site the studies.

This is known as "borrowed science" meaning, they are siting studies not based on their product.

St. John's Wort as Mood Enhancer? It is a great natural remedy, which is given in hospitals of Europe for moods and pains. However, it has one drawback: it make the skin more sensitive to the sun. Better and totally harmless in my experience is homeopathic St. John's Wort! It does not make the skin sun sensitive as far as I have experienced it. Here is what I would do for moods (and have done for pain): 1) I would buy a bottle of homeopathic St. John's Wort pills, milk sugar base. Those are the cylindrical pills, not the ball shaped ones. Strength: X6, X12 or X30. The strength does not really matter too much, although the X30 is said to work more on the emotions. X6 or X12 work fine, too. 2) I would place 2-4 pills in a 1 ounce dropper bottle. 3) I would add purified water. 4) Optional: to enhance the taste to my liking, I would add a few drops of organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and a bit of organic brown sugar to taste. 5) I would shake up the mixture and take a drop (or 2 or 3) under my tongue, at first every few seconds if needed, then every few minutes, every 15 minutes, half hour etc, yet, at least three times a day for days after I would feel fine. 6) If I would suffer mood swings or depressive states, I would continue taking the remedy over extended periods of time, months, or years. One can skip taking the remedy the weekends to give the body a break and renew the impact of the remedy. 7) Make fresh every day or keep in the refrigerator when not used. Make fresh latest after 2 days. Make less if less is needed. I have never heard of any negative side effect from homeopathic remedy taken this way. Good health and the best of moods to you! It works for some people; perhaps mostly those with mild depression. If you take St John's Wort remember it interacts with many other medicines, so if you take anything else, check with your doctor first.

Did you try more than Paxil when you were on anti depressants? I ask because if that one didn't work for you, and if it made you feel worse, there are many more out there that you might feel better on. Just a thought.

Cognitive behavioural therapy has proven very effective in treating depression. You could also consider trying homeopathy, or herbalism.

Good luck with it.

It may help with your depression but won't do much for the anxiety. Many studies have confirmed that it helps mild depression, but there are studies that argue that. Is it safe? Well there are many differences of opinion regarding that. My opinion? It is as safe as paxil or as dangerous as paxil. It is a drug, maybe a natural one, but it is being used to change mood. It is still suggested you only take it under a doctors supervision.

It does work - but not immediately - you have to take it all the time and it starts working only after a while (i dont remember if it was 2 weeks or a month)
