Sexing rats is fairly easy with a few guidelines. First, check the rat yourself—pet shop employees can make mistakes. By the time the baby rats are weaned (4 weeks of age) the males’ testicles will have dropped, but they aren’t always obvious because they can be voluntarily pulled inside the body. The most definite test is to press down gently on either side of what appears to be a penis—the urinary opening for a female looks a lot like a penis—in a male the red penis will pop out, but not in a female. The female also has a vaginal opening directly behind the urinary protuberance.

Just a warning - If you have a male rat, DO NOT put another adult male rat with it. Adult male rats are extremely territorial, and they could seriously injure each other.
If your rat is female, you can't just dump another rat in there. First, put some vanilla extract on your hands and lightly rub the coats of both rats (keep them seperate). Don't use too much. Leave them alone in their seperate cages for a few minutes, then put them both in a dry bathtub. Let them mingle for a while. They might even ignore each other.
CLEAN THE WHOLE CAGE. Scrub the surfaces, change the bedding, boxes, toys, etc. Make sure everything is new. Then you can put them both in. Doing this will help keep them from fighting.

If it is a mature rat, the males have huge balls. You can easily tell the difference between males and females. I like rats and one day will get one as a pet, but only a female. The big balls on a male just looks nasty.

LOL. Good Luck. Rats are very hard to distinguish until they get a little older. The only thing I can tell you at this point is to search it on the internet and some sites have pictures of sexes at all ages. Look up "sexing baby rats" or something similar. But even trained eyes have a hard time until they are a month or 2 older. You might need to wait until they are a little older to be sure. I sexed my rat too early and named her Templeton thinking she was a male. We ended up keeping that name because I didn't have the heart to tell my 4 year old! lol.

Check under the tail, if you can see what looks like two marbles in a sock it is a boy, if you see nothing it is a girl. Check the picture if you are still unsure, female on the left, male on the right.

Pick it up and give it a shake - if it rattles it's a male...
Not really! Boy rats have very obvious boy bits (like a couple of marbles by their tails).

Put a telephone and an open can of beer in the cage.
If it goes for the telephone then it is female and if it goes for the beer then it is male.
