How can you honestly think that you are only going to get serius replys to such a question. First, they don't exist. Second, if they did exist, I would say you should ask them. However, every mermaid story I have ever known of has also had mermen. Also, when their (I can't believe I am answering this question) body is dried off, they look like people. So, when they are in the water, they do what fishies do, and when they are on land, they do what people do.
Here is a better question. If they don't ever have gills, how then do they breathe under water? Lungs do not have the ability to seperate air out of water. Just kidding. No need to answer that.
