Toddlers - 18 - 30 months usually nap between 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours in the afternoon, pre-schoolers 30 - 48 months usually nap around an hour a day. This depends on the child, but children that young need their mid-day naps. There are some kindergarten aged children (4-5 year olds) who nap in the afternoons.

My youngest son, who is now 26 months old, stopped taking naps for the past 6 months! He will only take a nap if he is totally exhausted and is resting on the couch during a quiet time---but that is usually around 5 or 6 PM and I really don't want him to nap then because it throws off his bedtime schedule and he won't go to bed when he usually does...around 8 PM.
All toddlers are different. When I was a preschool teacher a few years ago, we always layed the kids down for a nap (the toddler group-ages 18 months to 3 yrs old) and almost everyone of them took a nap for about 1 1/2 hours. Once in a while, there would be a child that would just lay there and not go to sleep--their mom said they had stopped taking naps at home as well.
If your child is up early, like 6AM-7AM, then I would say by about 1PM they would benefit greatly by taking a nap or rest period. I think 1 1/2 hours is just fine, as long as it does not run past 3PM-4PM because if it does, it will interfere with their bedtime schedule. As long as your child still wants and takes a nap, I would definitely encourage it because it also gives you a small break time as well. After having six children, I can say that when child is ready to give up their naps, you will definitely know---they will make it clear one way or another! Most toddlers that I know all stopped taking naps after their 3rd birthday.

I think around 4. Mine are 2 1/2 and still nap for about 1 1/2 hrs a day. According to a recent parenting magazine that is on track. I don't know what I will do when they do stop napping, that's how I get some chores done!

My daughter still wanted to take a nap when she was in kindergarten, but if she did, she wouldn't go to sleep early for school nights. 1 1/2 hours is not really too long, it would depend on how late you let them stay up at night. If you want them in bed early, then it will be difficult if they are still napping at 2-3 in the afternoon.

Studies show that many children stop taking naps at around age 4, but some experts say that may be too soon. "Daytime sleep remains important for kids during the preschool years and even throughout kindergarten," Dr. Mindell says. If your child falls asleep easily at naptime, it's a sign he still needs a daytime snooze. The following are indications that it's time to stop:
Your child is consistently fidgety and restless at naptime.
He doesn't have meltdowns in the late afternoon when he misses his nap.
When he does nap, he has a hard time going to sleep at his regular bedtime.

Mine is 25 months and he or she certainly nonetheless desires her nap! We went from 2 to a minimum of one approximately 4 or 5 months in the past. She now sleeps after lunch for one to 2 hours. She would be any such grump with out nap that i could no longer think of! I examine that toddlers desire naps till the age of four.

My daughter quit napping shortly after her 1st birthday. Yes 1 1/2 hours is quite long.
