should profiling be legally allowed since we all know who the groups are that commit the crimes in this country; and I mean all groups, all colors, all religions

I have lots of thoughts here, so bare with me.

I explain it this way to people.

You see a black guy driving a Honda Civic. He is wearing a suit, everything on the car is legal and all that stuff. He is probably not a criminal.

You see a black guy driving an 80s Oldsmobile with tinted windows, expired tags, he is wearing old messed up clothes. It might be good to stop and contact this guy. Maybe he just is down on his luck. Or maybe he's a career criminal who's always been in and out of jail.

Now do the two above scenarios and replace, black guy with white guy or Hispanic guy or whatever and you have the same thing.

In my experience as a police officer. I know the person with messed up hair and baggy clothes is much more likely to be a criminal then someone in a suit.

People don't understand that there is much more to profiling then race. A lot of things factor in, looks, age, how someone carries themselves, how they look at you, ect, ect, ect.

Not all people who drive a certain car, act a certain way or dress a certain way are criminals. But it is all about percentages.

Now I'm not saying race doesn't play into things. Because look at this way. You patrol a neighborhood that is 100% black. You see a car with a white guy driving through. Nothing illegal about this. But it is unusual. So it might warrant extra attention. Same if the neighborhood is 100% white and it's a black guy. It's not the person's race that you are focusing on. It's how unusual the situation is.

Also, lets say you work in a mostly black neighborhood. Most of your car stops are going to be black people. That is not racism, that is just simple statistics.

There is also a supreme court ruling that says, if you have a valid reason to stop a car, you can stop the car. It doesn't matter if you have an ulterior motive or not (such as sniffing to see if you smell drugs, to see what you can see in the car, ID someone, ect). Thats doesn't mean you can only go around stopping all blacks in a mostly white city. But it does give law enforcement some needed leeway to profile.

And finally, Arabs took down the World Trade Center. Not old Asian women. Not all Arabs are terrorists, but they are the main bad guys right now. It might do as well to focus more on them in Airports then on blacks, whites, asians or hispanics.

Profiling is not bad, it actually good police work.

Yes. Criminal profiling help the police find the right suspect for a crime. Should it be illegal - no, why would we not want to find the right person who committed a crime? What we need is a criminal justice system that actually worked.

No. If you legalize it, then it becomes too well known & the criminals will start using the info to get away with even MORE crimes! Keep it as secret as possible, then the agencies at least have a small edge on the criminals because they have a bit more room to "play" within the criminal rhelm & come out alive!

I think it certainly should be used. If I committed a crime you should be looking for someone who looks like me, not wasting time being politically correct. The problem lies in the human weakness of prejudging groups. There is a history of misusing the authority of law enforcement, but I don't think elimination of a valuable crime fighting tool should just be tossed out because some would misuse the power.

Its funny how law enforcement are not suppose to "profile", but its the dirtbags that catagorize themselves in the way they dress, people they hang out with, and in their actions, and law enforcement is not suppose to profile.?? I guess they want the freedom to act like a duck, quack like a duck, swim like a duck, have webbed feet like a duck, a bill like a duck, but be a turkey instead,,,????

Criminal profiling, not only should be allowed, it should be mandatory. Profiles of criminal behavior are the essence of law enforcement.

it's BS, profiling, isn't it a freedom, to dress how you want, talk how you want and act like you want (within reason of course) with out having to explain your self, I my self wear baggy cloths, i am skater from the late 90's, that's how we dressed, its comfortable to me. but i always seem to get harassed by the cops, "whens the last time you were arrested? where are your gang tattoo's, what gang are you in" its like dude..we live in a town with 2 stop lights, all my cloths are skateboard affiliated and i have not one tattoo on my body..f**k you Nazi!
