I have a panda bear hamster (black and white syrian) and I got him around Christmas time, so he's about 6 months old now...he used to be very active starting at around 10pm and would run in his wheel all night but lately he just sleeps all day and all through the night (I know because he is loud and usually wakes me up). He looks different, too, because his eyes look crusty and he is sleeping in the open part of his cage now and not his favorite hiding spot. Is he okay?

Until I read the part about your hamster having crusty eyes i would of said dont worry.

I also have a syrian, he is slightly older than yours, we have had him a year. He too can sleep all through the night sometimes, thats just the way he is now. Apart from that he is very healthy, we take him for regular check ups at the vets to keep on top of his health.

I agree with one of the answers already. Wipe away any crusty bits round the eye very gentley. Use a slightly damp cotton bud. He could have an eye infection, especially if you use very fine woodchip/sawdust in the cage as dust particals can irritate some hamsters delicate little eyes. With anything your unsure about it is always best to pop him down to your local vet for a check over.

you can take a warm wet soft cloth and wash his eyes if he will let you. Keep them clean and make sure that he is not in a draft or he will get really sick.

Another thing you might want to think about is that at 3 years old a hamster is considered old aged... it is the same for mice, chipmunks and other rodents.

Keep his cage warm and dry, if he is not better in a few days, since this has been going on for a bit now, you might take him to a vet, but that could get costly. Do that as a last resort.

Good Luck with the little guy.

To me it sounds like He has a cold. Take Him to the Vet ASAP.

He also might want more attittation. Change His cage around and play w Him more. Does He have a ball? If not get Him one.

As for his eyes Dip his head in honey water then dry Him off. It may sound crazy but trust me it works.

Good luck!!!

He may have a cold or some other sickness. Just pay attention to it a little more and just see if the hamster is depressed or something, but wash your hands before and after you handle him.

my sons hamster is the same way.would rather do nothing but sleep.about 5 months old. we wake him up, and put him in his ball after playing with him. then he is awake for awhile. we took him to the vet when it first started, nothing wrong. just a lazy hamster. lol we even keep trying different things in his cage.

Sounds like he might have a cold. Make sure you wash your hands before you touch him, for his sake. They can catch colds easy. He may get better in the next few days. Is he eating and drinking?

I think you should use a wet towel to wipe his eyes. Also if you have an exercise ball, then put him inside and see if he rolls in it.If he doesn't,he could just be a lazy hamster.

he may be eating to much food. or he is tired of his old toys. try giving him healthier food and a brand new toy.
