You could, but you'd still have to watch your spending. It depends on your down payment. Also, you have to pay attention to additional costs like insurance, property tax (which could be different in certain areas), mortgage insurance, and association fees.
In other words, this is average pay in California relative to the housing costs.

A good rule of thumb has always been "if your rent payment or house payment is less then you take home in one week then you should be able to manage comfortably." You still need to watch your other expenditures. This generally is true in any economy.

Making $32/hr is good for anyone anywhere. In some communities that is living large. For me it is... nice money... you must be in some science or math field to do that.

Not really, at least not in the major cities. If you live in San Francisco for instance, that will barely cover the cost of living.
