A friend of mine is off to join the Army in the summer but the regiment is based in Germany (we're British).

Does this mean you don't get to come home to the UK very often, as if you were based in Britain you could just jump on the bus at weekends but can't really do this from Europe?!

Thanks

He will be entitled to 30 days leave a year this does not count weekends, he will also get the odd bank holiday depending on what his unit is doing.

Leave is normally taken in block leave with the whole unit going on leave at the same time normally 1 week at easter, 3 weeks summer leave and remaining 2 weeks over the xmas period.

Obviously this depends on what the unit is doing if on tour then normal leave goes out the window but you do get extra leave before and after tours with a 2 week leave period during the tour.

Firms like BMI and AIRBERLIN offer very cheap flights to the UK, also ferries and the chunnel are not too bad.

If the unit is on leave and you aren't it is because you are on duty or centrally employed or even on course and you don't automatically get long weekends. you take your leave later

you get the same leave entitlement as you do if you was based in UK plus we dint work most weekends plus bank holidays so there is plenty of scope to get home especially now with cheap flights plus it only takes 4/5 hours to drive to Calais so its not that far away and you can get the bus home but i don't recommend that as it takes forever
but it is well worth you popping over there for a visit as there is plenty to see and do over there as well as your duty frees
